Cheese and Coldcuts
If you are anything like us, every time you return to Eleuthera at least a third of your baggage allowance is taken up by a cooler full of meat and cheese. We have often joked about how many coolers we have “smuggled” in.
Our family are big cheese eaters and the thought of going the whole season with nothing but Bahamian Orange (you know the stuff I mean) is simply not acceptable. So just before flight time we make a run to the nearest Costco, buy a new cooler and fill it up with a selection of cheese and cold cuts to last at least part way through the season.
Now it looks like we won’t be doing that anymore …
I was speaking with Burchie at the North Eleuthera Shopping Centre and he showed me his deli orders which should start to arrive in the next couple of weeks.
Look for white Cheddar, Feta, Gouda, Emmental, Jarlsberg, Havarti, Parmesan and Danish Blue to name just a few. Plus a selection of sausages and cold cuts including roast beef, bratwurst and spicy Italian sausage.
The best news is that these will all be at, or near US prices. They already have in stock a pretty decent aged Kerrigold Cheddar, large blocks of Mozzarella, and a spicy Pepperjack.
Warning
One word of caution is Daisy. This is a cheese ( and I use the word lightly) that is apparently a favorite on Spanish Wells. Go ahead and try it if you want but pick the smallest piece you can find. In my opinion Daisy makes regular Bahamian Orange taste like the finest aged Cheddar, so use caution.
The bottom line here is that we can finally leave the coolers at home and buy our cheese and cold cuts locally without taking out a bank loan to do it. I hope you will support Burchie’s effort so he will continue to import a selection of non traditional foodstuffs to the Bahamas.
